Ashland Inc., producer of Valvoline, is one of the countries largest independent petroleum refiners, and the nations top producer of industrial chemicals and plastics. Additionally, Ashland is involved in the production of coal and natural gas and their construction division, APAC is the largest highway contractor in the U.S.

Program Management was asked to review Ashland's headquarters property portfolio in (Eastern Kentucky, 1978) in the context of the company's shift in market focus -to refining and distribution - plus its proposed reorganization. Alternate strategies for the disposition and/or relocation of different business units and key operations (e.g. data center) were considered together with proposals for new and/or leased facilities. One strategy was selected, the company announced the sale of its exploration and production units the following month, moved forward with the construction of a new Ashland Coal building near its headquarters location, vacated many central Ashland, Kentucky leased buildings and later relocated its Data Center to a new building in Lexington, Kentucky.
